Emergency Response

In a cardiac emergency, every second counts. Empowering youth and communities with the knowledge and confidence to act can save lives. Our Emergency Response page provides accessible resources to help you understand and respond effectively in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest.

Step-By-Step CPR Guide

Knowing how to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) can double—or even triple—a person’s chance of survival during cardiac arrest. Here's a simple guide to performing hands-only CPR:

  1. Check Responsiveness: Tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?” If there's no response, call 911 immediately.

  2. Call for Help: Dial 911 or have someone nearby call. If available, ask someone to locate an AED.

  3. Start Chest Compressions

    • Place the heel of one hand on the center of the chest; place your other hand on top.

    • Push hard and fast (at least 2 inches deep and 100–120 compressions per minute).

    • Let the chest rise completely between compressions.

  4. Continue Until Help Arrives: Keep performing compressions until EMS arrives, an AED is available, or the person starts to move.

What is an AED?

A defibrillator with two electrode pads on a wooden surface.

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and delivers a shock if needed to restore a normal rhythm.

How to Use an AED:

  1. Turn the AED on and follow the voice prompts.

  2. Expose the chest and attach the pads as shown in the diagrams on the pads.

  3. Stand clear while the AED analyzes the heart rhythm.

  4. If advised, deliver a shock by pressing the shock button.

  5. Resume CPR immediately after the shock until help arrives.

AEDs are designed for public use and are often found in schools, airports, gyms, and community centers.
